Over the last century, Australia has witnessed a simultaneous paradox of rapid decreased in the incidence of communicable diseases with continuous growth of long term NCDs. Recent national indicators suggest that NCDs contribute to at least 43% of the total number of diseases treated in primary care, with those from lower socio-economic backgrounds being largely overrepresented. More importantly, NCDs are considered one of the main contributors of social inequalities due to their longterm complications which often result in high rates of reliance of social welfare within these communities .

For instance, one of the most common yet devastating NCDs is diabetes. This chronic disease is largely associated with a poor diet and sedentary lifestyle.
