Happiness is a vague term that people use to talk about their lives. The word means different things to every person. There is no definition that encompasses all that people think happiness is. Many people equate owning material items and money with being happy, while others seek happiness by travelling to new and exotic places around the world. In addition, there are people who find happiness in being part of a group, like being part of a sport team or being a follower of a religion. In American society, happiness is often defined by how much wealth or material goods are owned by people. People strive to buy the best clothing, cars, and houses in an attempt to improve their quality of life. Advertising is one of the biggest element in American society that capitalizes on happiness in an attempt to get people to buy their products, making various claims how those products can improve people’s quality of life. The first obvious action that they are doing is smiling. Smiling is a universal sign of happiness anywhere in the world, regardless of different cultures and customs. People associate the action of smiling with happiness as it is a natural bodily response to stimuli that make people feel content or elated. Another component that displays happiness is their body movements. While the advertisement itself only is a still image, the way in which the bodies are positioned suggest motion. The models in the front of the group are shown in a slanted position, not standing up straight. This is a technique in art called implied motion in which the position of the figures are slightly diagonal to give the illusion that there are movement in a two dimensional plane. Several figures in front of the group display this technique in their stance. Actions are important because they are better at conveying emotions, in this case happiness, than being
