Individualism allows one to be self- reliant, and that can be greater than standing along with others. In Anthem, by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 lives in a society controlled by collectivism, and he is different. Equality 7-2521 is advanced in his society, which is exactly what the leadership doesn’t want. Equality is disciplined for his excess knowledge and ability to excel. Equality is able to identify that he could change this society and make it better. He builds his knowledge and starts to feel happiness for the first time. But Equality can’t stay, he runs away and becomes an individual. Equality 7-2521 overcomes collectivism through becoming an individualist, learning about collectivism, and through the idea of “I”.
