In the book Anthem, by Ayn Rand, the main character is Equality 7-2521 also known as Prometheus. The story Anthem takes place in some unidentified future time where the past is known by The Mentionable times. Equality lives in a collective society, which means that a man must be chained to collective action and collective thought for the sake of what is called “the common good”. In this community everyone is assigned a job by the Council of Vocations, in which Equality is given the occupation street sweeper. However, he has always been engaged in the wonder of science and secretly desires to be a scholar. In this society the people are only allowed to refer to themselves by their name or by “we” not the word “I”, which relates to individuality.
