Anthem In the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand, the protagonist Equality 7-2521 builds a light box in an empty subway tunnel that he finds. He believes that by experimenting, he is performing many transgressions, but continues to do so. Many readers are left asking themselves why Equality continues to conduct experiments while feeling like he is committing a great sin. I believe that he continues his experiments because he wants to atone for his transgressions against the society he is a part of. Equality’s reasons for continuing are hopeful but misguided, and should not be the motives of other people. People may be ungrateful for what they have because they are wishing for a life better than the one in which they are living, whether their life now is adequate or not. Another reason why this type of motivation is harmful to a society is because people would stop doing the jobs that are needed, such as garbage collectors or plumbers. While the people that usually perform these jobs are dreaming of a different situation or occupying their time with hobbies, these important jobs are not getting done and society is hurting because of it. Once the most important jobs are not getting done, every other job becomes harder to perform. Also, people’s desires will overlap, leading to conflict. If so many people want to be astronauts that there are no more spaces for perspective astronauts, people may get competitive and violence will ensue. Lastly, people will be heartbroken when they cannot achieve the goals they worked so hard to achieve. Not everyone is able to be the job that they want, which means that the people that cannot get the jobs that they want, will be heartbroken. This would lead to a very depressed
