Anthem is written based on the idea that selfishness should be valued above all else in that furthering your own ideas and investing time into ones passion is better than working towards one goal to help the majority . In the story Equality is interested in how things in the world he pursues his need to see how things work at the cost of others such as the workers that found the man hole with him. Equality works on his box to satisfy his own selfish desire to stand out from the normal. He doesn’t want to fit in he wants recognized for his work and to know he is valued above others. Equality wants people to commend him on his work so he can feel pride in something he did.
