“Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future,” said J.F.K. Changing the start time of school can lead to better learning with more focused kids at school. This change in the high school can have a good or bad outcome but, taking in both the good and bad information, this could be something great for the high school. The Detroit Lakes High School needs to improve the start time to increase attendance, have better test scores, and decrease dropout rates. The first reason the high school should change the start time, is to improve how the teenage brain thinks. According to the National Sleep Foundation, teens across the nation are suffering from sleep deprivation from not getting enough sleep at night. Sleep deprivation is very serious during teenage years. According to attendanceworks.org, later start times have increasing attendance because kids are not feeling sluggish and are awake enough to feel ready to go to school. When less kids are dropping out of school, that means that more kids will probably think about attending college after high school. With less tardiness comes more kids being in class and not missing work. Even though classes are shorter the attendance record will be up. The Detroit Lakes High School needs to change the start time of school so that attendance records are better, test scores are higher and dropout rates are lower. Although some people may disagree with change, and not think a later start time is a good thing you have to think about the good things that come from it and also considered the bad things. Having this change in the high school will improve test scores, decrease dropout rates, and have less students
