After reading and analyzing Keeping Corner, by Kashmira Sheth and The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, one must come to the conclusion that people who can endure hardships grow to be strong individuals later in life. A great example of this is from the novel Keeping Corner, Sheth writes “ Leela my dearest sister, I had to leave because of the argument with Bapuji. It is bad enough Ramanal has died, but I don’t understand why you have to cut your hair” (72). This quote shows three of the many hardships that Leela must face. From the cutting of her hair, to her fiance Ramanal dying, and finally the separation of her brother to the rest of the family due to family traditions. This quote shows Leelas growth as a young women because at the beginning of the book all Leela was focused on was her and her many problems. However as the story continues she realizes that the problem is much bigger and resolves her own problems so she can help others. Another story that helps illustrates the theme that people who endure hardships grow to be strong individuals in life is The Book Thief, by Zusak. A quote that illustrates this is” Liesel, still covered in dust and detritus from the bombing, does not bathe nor left the house for the four days leading to the day of the funerals ” (540). This quote is important because it kind of shows the lowest part of liesel and her shock of everyone dying. This quote shows kind of what we believe to be the downfall of Liesel because she has lost everything from her real mother, her brother, her adopted family, and now Rudy. Yet, as time goes by we realize that Liesl found the will to survive. A quote that displays this courage to survive is “When I finally came for Liesel, I took selfish pleasure in the knowledge that she had lived her ninety years so
