Thinking like a freak requires someone to approach a problem from different angles, use unorthodox methods, and ignore preconceptions and limitations. An example of people who think like a freak would be the case of two prisoners who escaped prison by using only dental floss and toothpaste. In 2000, Vincenzo Curcio, an Italian mob boss, was convicted of a murder and was going to be prosecuted for seven more. Naturally, he would want to flee, so he sawed through the bars with dental floss and escaped. Meanwhile, Antonio Lara also escaped by covering the bars with toothpaste and cutting through the bars with floss afterwards. However, Lara only wished to escape his cell to kill a rival inmate. He gets himself out of perilous situations by using his ingenuity to resolve the issue only with tools available at hand. For example, in one episode, the titular character is trapped in a basement and uses a set of cables and a pair of high fidelity stereo speakers to act as a sonar detector to find a secret door to escape. The two prisoners and MacGyver looked for other options that ordinary thinking might not have given them. As a result, they escaped their confinements by thinking like freaks.
