Family Family may seem like a simple concept, but there is no simple definition of family. In common words, a family is a group of individuals who share a legal or genetic bond. They live together with a special bond called love. Family stands on the pillars of responsibility, trust, sacrifice and hope. Family structure helped civilizations to carry their culture to the next generation. Family structure played a special role to shape human history. The meaning of family changes with the natural and economic conditions. The real meaning of family is a lot more complicated in today’s world. In ancient times, individuals need families to accomplish the common goals. Those families were extended families, a mother, a father, children and grandparents of children. They lived together because of their necessities like food, shelter and security. Often children and elderly helped the family members in daily chores. Stability of a family depends upon abundance of food. Family members seek migration or displacement if they cannot provide enough food to the family. Dreadful social and economic situations can keep a family apart. Everyone wants to save their family from war, hunger, crime and terrible weather. People do incredible sacrifices to save their families. Individuals will leave their mother land, language and culture forever to feed their families well. Those separations among family members produce devastating results in their lives. The novel “Enrique’s Journey," tells us how social changes in society led to change people’s life. Since the increase in divorce rate and decrease in the popularity of traditional marriage, many families fell apart. Enrique’s family went into extreme poverty after his father has left. Then Enrique’s mother Lourdes decided to leave her two kids with her relatives. She entered in United States illegally. She worked hard to give a good life to her children, but Enrique and Belky always wanted to rejoin with their mother. It caused a great distrust between them. This whole situation damaged their relationship. Then Enrique took a dangerous decision to ride the trains throughout Mexico and entered in United States. He was robbed and beaten on the way. Lourdes and her kids spent a big chunk of their lives in different parts of the world. They sacrificed a lot for the sake of family, but they get very least. Industrial revolution created a new class of family called middle-class family. They are not the rich, nor are they poor. Middle-class families are small. In which most of the time children study, and both parents work. Now they are major part of the economy of the industrialized world. No family at all is a new trend of highly changing urbanized
