How Does Sexual Orientation Affects People's Opinion Of Sexual Preference

Today’s people have been witness to a fast changing world. The world and its people are not the same as they were 100, 50, or even 25 years ago. People’s opinion on matters such as race, civil rights, and education. Yet no other matter has seen as much change as people’s opinion of sexual orientation. The range of change goes from the rounding success of acceptance and understanding in Europe and North America to the regression of public opinion in regions such as Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Personally, when I am confronted with a person of a different sexuality than that of heterosexual, I don’t treat or think of them any different based on their sexual preference. Growing up in Cicero, with its high concentration of Mexican Roman Catholics, I guess I was surrounded with people that were secretly LGBTQ or curious about their sexuality but scared of what their family would think of them so they hid their feelings. However, by growing up in Cicero, with its large populated concentrated in a small 3 by 3 mile area, I was also exposed to some people that were open about their sexuality. The first couple of days in college I spent making new friends. With the creation of these new friends I later on discovered that one of them was openly gay. Sadly, with my lack of interaction and understanding of different sexual orientation, I did not know what was expected of me so I acted as I normally act. It took me a while to feel comfortable asking a couple of question about homosexuality, but once I found out that being curious of other people’s sexuality was not insulting I gain the confidence to ask more questions.
