Upon completing high school, some students may choose to take a year off before attending college. For some this may be a welcomed and needed break from the academic rigor that has been their daily routine for more than a decade and even longer for some. However, by taking this yearlong break, they put themselves at a disadvantage that may cost them down the line.

By prolonging their venture into higher education students may run the risk of losing their ability of retaining new information and recalling past material they were exposed to while in elementary, secondary and later high school. Also they may be in danger of prolonging the time it will take to complete a degree program. Attending college may become discouraging to prospective students after taking this break from high school, …show more content…
A common occurrence with seen with most students who delay their entrance into college lose the fundamental and key study skills, time management skills that they gained through the primary schooling, which in turn may lead to lower grades and diminish the overall college experience.

In conclusion by taking a break from academia graduating seniors can severely hinder their chances at succeeding at the next level of education, in sabotaging themselves in losing key skills that are a requirement for success at the next level. Furthermore, the possible negative effects greatly outweigh any positives that may come from a yearlong break.
