Marshall Mathers LP Marshall Mathers, or by his studio name “Eminem”, is perhaps one of the most controversial rappers to ever be in the game. Although hated and also loved, no one can doubt the talent that he brings to the stage, paper, and studio. On May 23, 2000, Marshall displayed this God-given talent by releasing his album the Marshall Mathers LP, selling almost two million copies within the first week, it won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. In spite of the controversy of the album, Eminem proves his lyrical “genius”, and the strong ability he has to suddenly switch moods and rhyme schemes.
In Marshall’s hit song, “Stan”, he portrays his lyrics in a strong and vivid experience. The talented rapper uses his lyrics perfectly to help the listener imagine the obsessiveness of one of his fans named Stan. In the song Stan is writing letters to Eminem expecting a response back, Stan writes things like “I got a room full of your pictures and your posters man”, which gives the listener the feel for Stan and how he admires Eminem. Throughout the song though, Eminem really picks out his lyrics carefully to display the rising anger and frustration that Stan has the more he writes to Eminem but receives no answer. The first verse in the song Stan is telling Eminem how much he loves him and his music.

He starts off optimistic by saying “Dear Slim, you still ain’t called or wrote, I hope you get a chance” but then the frustration grows and he writes “I just think it’s just screwed up you don’t answer fans”. Later in the verse Stan tells Eminem his personal problems on how he self-harms. This gives off the impression to the readers that Stan may not just be a devoted fan, but maybe even a lunatic. Stan ends his second letter by awkwardly saying “Sincerely yours, Stan. P.S. we should be together
