I feel I have gathered the most from the LSE100 course this term with regard to the latter two questions on the guidelines provided. Each week, we are provided with differing models of analysis, and new angles to pursue ourselves in the wider reading. This all helps one develop not only a keen insight to the key social issues of today, but it is very useful for my current legal studies. Whilst learning the technical components of the law, it is hard to keep sight of the larger social issues going on, as no matter how much it seems to be the case, the law doesn’t operate in a vacuum. The targeted readings and portfolio questions allow me to develop novel insights into the operation of international laws. An example being the relationship between the US and China and also the significance of Hong Kong help explain the significance of double tax treaties that exist between them. And another dimension added is the contrasts between the non-consequentialist and consequentialist approaches to criminal law enforcement. They’re not just useful in contemplating whether the prison sentences one reads about in the newspapers are appropriate; but they also provide another dimension to looking at the white collar crimes one encounters when studying taxation and commercial law. It helps produce reasoned normative writing against harsher penalties or extensive regulation, and comes against the core principles of our capitalist society.
