Through this interview, I added the responsibility of prioritizing curriculum to my concept of the role of a teacher. While in some ways my original belief that teachers chose students’ curriculum was confirmed, I had not realized that these choices meant students may not learn other important state mandated information. My experience in field placement furthered my conceptual addition that standards apply to all grade levels. My teacher Mrs. Wines teaches in a reading intervention room for first and second graders. Students work in small groups of four to eight with Mrs. Wines once a week for half an hour. I was surprised by the state standards Mrs. Wines has to meet for every student despite meeting with them for such a small amount of time. During my observations, Mrs. Wines had me make copies and sort Title I progress reports filled out for each student into folders. Helping all students reach the same level of cognitive achievement is a noble goal, but I am not sure if it is a realistic one. From what I have seen, there are always students who will put in more effort than others no matter how a teacher tries to motivate them. For me, I think I could meet this goal of equity in other fields that work with children. In some fields, I could help children reach this goal of equity physically as well as mentally. For example, in pediatrics I could help a sick child become well, allowing them to reach the same levels as other children physically and mentally. Since I have added equity to my concept of teacher roles, I have also added it to my concept of personal fulfillment. Yet I am aware that I can reach this fulfillment in areas other than
