“A healthy mind is a healthy body and healthy body starts here at the Y! Life gets much better after coming to the Y, it definitely can’t go wrong.” – Mike Rush, US Marine Corp veteran and member at the Ransburg YMCA since summer of 2014. Mike Rush had always had an active life until he left the US Marine Corps. Somehow, after his service in the Marines, life got in the way and exercise was not a regular part of his routine. Thinking back now, he believes his inactivity started taking a toll on his health, but he strongly feels now that exercise should be a part of everyone’s daily life, as important as brushing one’s teeth or taking a bath.
Four years ago, Mike was in a serious automobile accident and sustained multiple injuries. He suffered fractured ribs, damage to his spinal cord, and a concussion, which led to six months of bed rest after his release from the hospital. There are very few places where you get to meet people and really get to know them. But here at Y, you meet people from all walks of life. You learn about their lives- about their grandkids, kids, husbands or wives, and pets. Water aerobics class is like a non-stop talk fest. The instructor has to ask us to stop sometimes. Everybody in the class is at a different level. When you feel tired and a little burned out and you see others around, you want to keep going. The group exercise gives incentive, motivates you in a fun and healthier way with loads of laughs and jokes. You don’t realize how much you have exercised, but you see the results in the long run. The water aerobics classes refresh your mind, exercise almost all your muscles, even the facial muscles with all the happy smiles! After a couple of hours a week in the pool, I feel tired.
