In this week’s reflection, I learned about the AR-10’s Iron Sights, Optics and Night Vision. A shooter who chooses an AR-10 is a shooter that needs a cartridge. That will out-perform the range and capabilities of the 5.56 or .223 in the AR-15 platform. The biggest selling point of the AR-10 is to have the capability of immediate follow up shots with the .308 Winchester or 7.62 cartridge without manually cycling the bolt to the rear. The extended range of the .308 demands that the shooter be able to identify the target far away as well as closer ranges and have optics that can withstand the abusive recoil.
Since most .308 Winchester rifles are bolt action guns instead of semi-automatic that allows engagement of more targets and animals. With the increase in caliber as well as faster engagement capabilities the AR-10 user will need high quality and abuse taking sights. Anyone that is a true shooter knows the importance of having iron sights. Once an optic fails a back-up iron sight will get the job done. Every rifle should have at least a fold-down or side mounted flip-up sight and develop shooting skills with it.
Optics may fail or run out of power. Iron sights however, may be sighted in and left alone until the scope fails. Many rifles have a combination of the red-dot optic and iron sight forming

When using a rifle scope with a flip up sight this will be hard if not impossible due to scope height and magnification. A simple side-mount attachment may be used to allow shooting with the rifle tilted slightly. There are fixed iron sights, flip-up iron sights incase the optics fail or off-set flip-up iron sights mounted at a 45° angle that may snag and require canted shooting. When selecting the AR-10 scope, the shooter must begin with knowing the correct base such as a Weaver or Picatinny and know the correct diameter of the tube to fit the scope
