The Spanish American War was a conflict between the United States and Spain that took place in 1898. The war was primarily fought over the independence of Cuba, which was a Spanish colony. The United States intervened in the War to support Cuban rebels who were fighting for their independence. The Spanish American War only lasted from April 25th 1898 to December 10th 1898 because of the Treaty signed which was the Treaty of Paris. The Spanish American war had many effects on former Spanish colonies including Guam, the Philippines, and Cuba.

Guam was affected big time by the Spanish American War. The 1898 Treaty of Paris transferred ownership of Guam from Spain to the United States. The United States Navy maintained Guam both physically and discursively. Guam was an essential American forward base, Guam was run like an order battleship under American rule. The people of Guam wanted a new Government right after the U.S. took over the leading families of Guam. They established a legislature in anticipation of a democratic representative Government.

The Treaty of Paris also played a role in the Philippines as the Treaty put the Independence of the Philippines in the United States hands after the U.S. had ratified the treaty causing the Philippines American War. The war lasted 3 years and resulted in the death of over 4,200 Americans and over 20,000 Filipino combatants. During the war over 200,000 Filipino civilians died from violence, famine, and disease. In 1942 the island would fall under Japanese occupation during World War 2 and U.S. forces and Filipinos fought together from 1944 to 1945 to regain control and the Philippines finally got their independence July 4,
