“Oh, I hope iBoss will let me access my home wifi today,” I thought to myself as I was reaching for my school issued iPad. I logged in and sighed in relief: it didn't appear that I would be having problems with it today. I was ready to start on my essay paper. All of a sudden, my wifi connection shifted from working without difficulty to not functioning at all. That left me unable to write my essay, or even finish the rest of my homework, which I would have to explain to my teachers the very next day. At that moment I really wished that homework was paper-based; then, I wouldn't be having this problem in the first place. Although online homework provides some advantages to students and teachers, paper homework is mentally and physically beneficial to students in the long run.
Proponents of online educational platforms will argue that online homework has been sufficient in simplifying the process of submitting assignments, but this doesn’t mean that making something simple improves student learning. For example, paper homework has been scientifically proven to help students better remember information that they write down (especially for tactile learners) than if they typed everything down on a keyboard. Online work does make it easier for students and teachers to keep track of materials (Penner 1), but the cost outweighs the benefits. Unlike online work, paper homework helps students take more responsibility because they need to be careful not to lose work-- or else risk having to do their homework over again. In addition, paper homework is something young students need as they learn important organization skills. Many need to actually touch the paper and separate work into specific folders in order to understand how to virtually organize
