Society can alter people negatively, therefore dismantling families and other important relationships. During apartheid in South Africa, a man who just returned on a bus from retrieving his wages, was attacked by a gang that consisted of his son and others. They attempted to rob the man. Without knowing, the man killed his son in an attempt to defend himself. The man managed to escape the rest of the boys by hiding under a truck. The son’s body ended up being thrown under the truck by the others. At this point the man looked over to see his son, but turned away and morosely and said, “People arise! The world is dead” (Paton 2). This expresses the frantic cry for people to recognize the destruction of families that society is causing. In the book, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, it was arbitrary for Hitler to force distribute the Jews among concentration camps to be starved and used as slaves, eventually resulting in being gassed to death. In “The Wasteland,” the man and his son were torn apart by society . Their relationship which is supposed to be a loving healthy one, is instead corrupted by personal desire. Similarly, in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the Jews were torn apart from their families under the control of Hitler. In both pieces of literature, families were destroyed because of selfishness. The world can prevent similar events from occurring by maintaining a self-aware environment as well as developing a positive family
