Critique #1: Anne Hutchinson The piece of work I am reviewing is The Trial of Anne Hutchinson (1637) which was written by Thomas Hutchinson in 1963 and later renewed in 1964 by Lawrence Shaw Mayo. The purpose of this article is to inform readers on the background of Anne Hutchinson as well as the trial at the Court at Newton. I have a positive evaluation of the journal article based on the style, organization, and key ideas portrayed in the work. Anne Hutchinson can be known to be one of the most influential woman in history. “Anne Marbury was born in Alford, Lincolnshire, England. The date of her birth remains unknown but she was baptized on July 20, 1591. Her father, Francis Marybury, was a clergyman who was influenced by puritan ideas.” …show more content…
Although, at the time it wasn’t the ‘norm’, she practiced what she believed in without the influence of others. Especially coming from this time period, she taught women that it was okay to do their own thing and not listen to the corrupt system that men have a higher power. At this time woman were viewed as someone who just does house chores while the men work for a living. Anne defied the common woman during this time. For example, during the trial Governor John Winthrop states, “Mr. Hutchinson, the sentence of the court you hear is that you are banished from out of our jurisdiction as being a women not fit for our society, and are to be imprisoned till the court shall send you away.” (textbook 39) She took the charges and stood up for what she believed in and agreed to flee the town because she wasn’t going to back down and give up her beliefs. Ron Charles can agree with this statement by stating, “Hutchinson is a classic feminist hero, of course, a woman who dared to speak (and disagree) when women weren’t allowed to teach or preach.” (Charles 1) I personally believe this counts for a lot of laws we have in place today for example freedom of religion and that everyone has the same rights regardless of race or sex. Anne Hutchinson displays a great hero in today’s society for all
