My career goal is to work as a primary care physician in medically underserved populations in the United States and Latin America. My past volunteer experiences in public health have allowed me to learn about the many different problems that underserved communities have. The volunteer experience that has influenced my plans the most is the two years I spent as the lead English/Spanish interpreter at the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic. Here I was able to shadow family physicians and medical students as well as to get to know several patients. From the patients that attended this free clinic, 90% of them were Spanish speakers and the only form of access to health care was through this clinic.
