Volunteering is very important in society. It is through voluntary work that nonprofit organizations are able to continue with their efforts of assisting the needy. These organizations have to continuously invent new ways of ensuring that they progress to get as many volunteers as possible. As a result, there have been emergent trends in volunteerism. One such trend has been micro-volunteering, which is the thesis for this paper. The rates of volunteering continue to be steady. However, the methods that individuals use to volunteer are changing. People are willing to volunteer, but they rarely have the time to spend hours doing voluntary work. Thus, the need for volunteering opportunities that are more flexible has been on the rise. Our world as of now is fast paced; everything has to be done within a short period of time. Most potential volunteers feel that they do not have a lot of time to engage in voluntary work. Hence, despite having the will they are compelled not to engage in volunteerism. Most voluntary activities demand a stable dedication of time to engage in voluntary activities. For instance, an individual can decide to engage in volunteerism during the weekend or set aside a specific day for such work. A volunteer working as an unpaid employee is involved in a full-time job, meaning that they have to spend a lot of time at their place of work. Increasing financial needs and crisis are pushing people to take up extra jobs in order to cater for their family needs. Others have been pushed into late retirement to ensure that they continue to work and make money to meet their daily needs. In addition, most individuals are taking care of their aging parents, while at the same time having the burden of providing for their children. This can only mean that people are already burdened with their financial needs. As such, it would be difficult to get volunteers willing to work an unpaid employees, or for them to spare as much time as a weekend or even a few hours to engage in voluntary …show more content…
As a result, there has been an increase in activities like a single-day service, where individuals dedicate hours to engage in physical volunteer work. Still, such activities will continue to witness minimal participation as they require a lot of time to complete the voluntary work. As a result, micro-volunteering has emerged as a trend in volunteerism. Micro-volunteerism does not demand a lot of time. In fact, volunteers can engage in voluntary activities while at the same time engaging in their personal work. The voluntary service under micro-volunteering is completed within a maximum period of thirty minutes (Ellis, 2012). There is a lot that volunteers can do, for instance while commuting using a bus, while at home taking care of children, or when lining up in a bank. For instance, during a calamity, volunteer organizations can come up with a support page.
