Why Am I Attending College

Being able to attend college, has been one of the most rewarding experiences. I was able to meet people with similar interests, get inducted into a professional fraternity for architecture, and grow as a person, all of which have influenced my educational and career goals.
I never thought that I would meet lifelong friends by going to school in a different city. Since being in college I have meet people who I can relate to physically, mentally, and socially, and people who have changed my view of the world. They have opened my eyes to new cultures, healthy lifestyles, and given me the chance to be myself without judgement. They were there for me when I experienced some hardships last semester and gave me hope when I felt like giving up. They have truly helped to make my college experience more memorable.

This fraternity has helped me to enter into the professional world of architecture by preparing me for job interviews, helping me to network, as well as, helping me to build my architecture portfolio. Also, this fraternity has given me many opportunities to help the local community. For example, one of the philanthropic activities that we organized was the building of a pergola for His House Children’s Shelter in Miami Gardens. The shelter was lacking aesthetic appeal and outdoor space for gathering; therefore, we built a pergola in a flower garden that would provide a covered, outdoor space for the children to gather and have meals or to socialize. It was a blast to get to engage with the children and show them that college is an attainable dream, while building a beautiful, functional structure—something I had never done before. The experiences I have had as a member of Alpha Rho Chi has validated my reason as to why I want to become an architect: architecture can change
