According to …. a major reason that students are choosing to either drop out or succeed academically is due to their level of motivation. Students who attend a college or join online have experienced some type of motivation when they made the decision to attend a college during their application process. Motivation is defined as the driving force which causes us to achieve our goals. Therefore, without motivation, we will have difficulty following through with the tasks required to achieve the goals. Achieving success is something many people consider to be difficult as well as maintaining motivation. However, with the tools and resources available, students will not only achieve academic success, but also find their motivation again and continue to see success in many aspects of their lives. Setting obtainable and realistic goals is an essential factor when possessing motivation and achieving overall success. By identifying the goals, a person is able to differentiate between what is essential and what is non-essential to them. Having particular goals instead of a broad spectrum of ideas, will help reassure people to maintain their sense of motivation and strive to work harder to earn their goals. A few important factors in setting goals include tracking progress, goal importance, complexity of the goal, and commitment (Locke & Latham, 2006).
