Troubled, neglected, schizophrenic, rebellious. All words that can be used to define Chris McCandless. Which of these are true begs to differ on how you view Chris. The way I see him is a young man that wanted to be adventurous, and had his mindset on what adventure he wanted to go on. Could it have been for a deeper reason than that? Possibly. However, I think that McCandless was just a risk taking teen that wanted to take a risk, also a teen that dealt with family problems.
Some were led to believe that Chris was schizophrenic, a condition that emerges usually in early adulthood. Feeling pushed away by your parents can hurt anyone, so it is easy to see how he could have been hurt and offended. No good parent should be okay with letting their child, of age or not, go on a road trip right after school, alone. No friends, chaperone, family, or anything of that nature. The way Chris just decided to up and leave with the bare minimum bats the eye in a way that makes him come off as a crazy, careless, selfish person. Not taking into account he could die, or his family could miss him could make bystanders view him as a snotty nosed teen that has no care in the world. “Research shows, for instance, that teens wildly overestimate certain risks- of things like unprotected sex and drug use- not to lowball them as one would predict”(Teens-Why the Teen Brain Is Drawn to Risk). With this being the case, it does not make sense to say Chris went into the wild care free not knowing he was taking a risk. If people his age overestimate risks it is only reasonable he would fit into that category as well, meaning he knew what he was getting himself
