How Did The Hatchet Survive

I think it's safe to say that suddenly crash landing in the middle of the canadian wilderness is something no one hopes for. Even though the same thing happened to the 13 year old Brian Robeson in the book Hatchet by: Gary Paulsen. He was left with only a hatchet to survive. He survived for a heart wrenching 54 days before being rescued. As I think about the skills it took for Brian to survive for that long. As I do this, I think sadly that I would not survive for as long and in the same conditions that Brian was in. The first reason I believe I would not survive in the wilderness like Brian because I can’t stand bugs and insects. On the first days Brian's struggled with the mosquitos and other insects. For, on page 34 it says “Mosquitos and some small black flies he has never seen before. All biting him and chewing at him.” I’ve always been very allergic to mosquitos, when I get bitten I swell up. I would not be able to bear the itch and the pain. This would impair my thinking and I would get off track and not do the essential things to live in the wilderness. Brian had to withstand eating the same gross foods everyday. It shows this in this quote on page 96 “ The second egg was easier, and by the third one, he had no trouble at all, It just slid right down.” I could not eat the things Brian was eating that were key to his survival. I’ve always hated most meat and eating a raw turtle egg is not something my stomach would take very well. I would have thrown up the eggs and have no food that day or maybe even the next day.
