“My squad was my family. My gun was my provider and protector and my rule was to kill or be killed.” In this passage the author, Ishmael Beah, he uses language that implies that the situation, though brutal was unavoidable which made it simple. All the children knew that they could die if they were not on offense. The children were always focused on the present and the future, rarely the past. The author often implied a tone that everything was going to be alright sooner or later. He says “My squad was my family.”, without mentioning that he has lost his biological family to the war.
