Job Shadowing

CS 2720 Individual Activity 1
I had the pleasure of doing a job shadow for the company, Great America Financial Services, located in Cedar Rapids. I had applied for a summer internship through the company, and during one of my scheduled interview days, they had me job shadow a team member in the department I would be working at if I received the position. Doing this would allow me to see a typical work day, and some of the tasks I would be completing day to day. The job shadow lasted for about 45 minutes, as I had to complete other interviews after it, but it was enough time to get some valuable information.

They have a team for developing new things, but the teams aren’t huge, and the department is also in charge of the databases and keeping them updated. They also handle, what they call as ‘incidents’ which is just them troubleshooting problems that other employees have when they are using some of the software that the team developed. He was showing me some examples, and most of the time its just silly problems the employees encounter that could be solved with a small amount of problem solving skills. So, what the typical day looks like is a lot of database updating and querying, incident fixing and troubleshooting, and if there is free time, some help on projects they are working on. These projects also include a large amount of documentation, as everything completed needs to be documented so new users can understand how to use the program. But it all depends on the number of incidents they get, because these incidents are labeled from high priority to low priority, if they are getting a lot of higher priority incidents, they just focus all their time to fixing those.
Since much of what he does involves databases and updating their websites with new information, the main programs and languages he uses are C# for asp.NET, SQL for the databases, and then Visual Studio and SQL Server Management Studio for writing their queries and code. They also have a few internal websites
