Later School Start Time

Imagine if you could have an extra hour of sleep before school starts. How sweet would that be? You would no longer have to go to school looking like a monster. Most students also dislike school, and being tired in school does not make it one bit better. For example, “In a national survey on the sleep patterns of U.S. adolescents (ages 11 through 17), NSF's (National Sleep Foundation) 2006 Sleep in America poll finds that only 20 percent of adolescents get the recommended nine hours of sleep on school nights” (NSF). Why do students go to school so early in the first place? Because that is the way it has always been. In the 1990’s, researchers began to discover that school times should be pushed back, because it disturbed teenagers sleep-wake patterns. As students get older, their sleep and wake times get later, making a later start time mandatory. More sleep helps keep teenagers healthy, and helps students be more alert and …show more content…
If the school time was pushed back, schools would still have to be the same amount of time, therefore ending later and possibly cutting into sports and other after school activities. To solve this simple problem, after school activities, along with sports, would just have to be pushed back as well. Another reason the school start time should not be pushed back it because students would take advantage of that extra time and use it to party and do other irresponsible activities. However, students love their sleep, and will eventually use the extra time to their advantage. They will get a full night's sleep to jump start their day. High school start time should be pushed back one more hour. This extra hour of sleep helps students stay healthy, do well academically, and get the right amount of sleep that they need.
