Lotus Eaters In The Odyssey

In Homer’s epic poem called the Odyssey, there is a man named Odysseus who faces many trials to return home to Ithaca. This is somewhat of allegory at work with my life and probably some others as well. Also this a story about life’s many hardships and lessons that are learned. Likewise to the life of Odysseus, I will go through my life making and learning from my mistakes, and enduring hardship while i'm on my way to becoming a national champion as a college basketball player.

So what are some Lotus Eaters that are in my life or potentially be in my life, that keep me from my Ithaca. Some of the lotus eaters in my life could be parties, drugs, and other things that have to with fitting in socially. So in my life making hard decisions could be like not cheating on a test I didn’t study for or making unselfish decisions that could postpone my Ithaca. Odysseus had to make a lot of tough decisions that made him have to stand his moral ground. The first example is, when Odysseus travels to Hades he sees a familiar shade named Elpenor who was a part of his crew. He tells Odysseus that he died an honorable death then asks odysseus to go back to Circe’s island and give him a proper burial since it was very important in Greek culture to have a proper burial so the spirit can find rest.This even more time for Odysseus to reach Ithaca and leaves him with more trials ahead. Another example, on Calypso island of ogygia, he made the tough decision of having immortality with a lovely goddesses or go continue on his perilous journey home to Ithaca to acquaint with his wife and grown up son. This shows Odysseus has character by the acts he has conducted through his journey where he could have been
