Nick Carraway Nick Carraway is a very interesting character in “The Great Gatsby”. Nick’s philosophy in life seems to be to try to please everybody, and just make it by in life. He is an alright guy. He is kind, and polite. However, he is also very skeptical and judgmental. He tells things the way they are, such as when Gatsby is afraid to talk to Daisy, Nick tells him to basically suck it up and that Gatsby is acting like a little boy. Nick not only gets himself into other people’s issues, but he has a number of his own. He has a girl he is interested in, he is rather unorganized when it comes to life, and he lives in a dump which he does not care for properly. He lives in a gorgeous part of town, but his dwelling is a rundown shack which he neglects to care for. The story describes his lawn as being a shaggy mess, and it also says that he is embarrassed when Daisy goes to use his bathroom and his old ratty towels. Nick was not born into poverty. While he is not as rich as, say, Gatsby, he is not that bad off, and could make some improvements on his dwelling. The state of his house makes a kind of statement that should not be made about anybody. It makes him look like he doesn’t care that his house is a horrible eyesore, and that he is okay with it looking like he is a hobo who couldn’t do any better. As far as the towels, it would be extremely embarrassing to have a lovely young lady use your bathroom and have to see that you practically use rags to dry your hands. He needs to upgrade a little. He should consider cutting his grass, maybe putting a coat or two of paint on the house, and upgrading toiletries. No matter how fragile you are, you should not have to live in such a way that you have to be embarrassed about anything in or on your
