Peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts a free society. As written by Sr. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. It seeks so to dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored.”. By writing this Dr. King, Jr. shows the power of peace over violence and how it can positively effect the cause and the society instead of giving the said cause negative views . Peaceful form of resistance can be seen throughout the press today .With all of the riots and protest going on today , we can see what effect peaceful resistance has on society compared to rioting and violent protesting. For example , NFL players are now kneeling during the national anthem and are facing the consequences of protesting by being fined or even fired according to NFL rules .These consequences have not stopped nor slowed down the movement. People were killed , police cars were set on fire ,and businesses were looted and vandalized . Accuracy in media estimated the total damage cost in Baltimore to be around 9 - 20 million and the total estimated damage cost of the ferguson riots to be at least 5.7 million. While being arrested the violent protesters would do everything possible to avoid arrest, such as shooting at, running from, and even attacking the arresting police officer or officers. Sadly during these riots the very cause they were protesting was lost and the only thing the public focused on was stopping the riots and protecting their cities, their businesses, and communities.
