Physical development at 2-3 years is building on previous skills and building confidence in skills already obtained. At this age, children should be able to run easily and confidently – including stopping and starting. Climbing is also something that children at this age should be able to do. This involves a few things like hand-eye coordination, and gripping. By this age children should be able to walk up and down stairs with relative ease. Children should also be able to pull and push large toys, or able to drag a toy on string around the room. However, at 2 ½ they may have trouble manoeuvring those objects if there are things in the way. In terms of building a tower, the child should now be able to make a tower of at least 7 cubes. They should also understand the concept of possession. For example, pointing to something and describing it as ‘mine’ or ‘hers’. This shows that they are acknowledging themselves as a person. Emotionally, they start taking turns in games and they can start to share and offer toys in order for someone to play with them. They engage and play with other children as opposed to playing alongside them. Children at this age also copy adults and friends for behaviours and mannerisms. This is a crucial period of development where you want to encourage good behaviour and attempt to eradicate less socially desirable behaviours.
