Many people don’t know that Pocahontas was also known as Rebecca Rolfe, Matoax, and Algonquinroughly. (2) Pocahontas’s dad “Powhatan Chiefdom” had a population of about 25,000 and included more than 30 Algonquian tribes. (3) Pocahontas is well known for her contributions to Jamestown and her acquaintance with Captain John Smith. (1) She also befriended many of the Jamestown colonists and brought them food. (4) Pocahontas was known for being a tomboy who enjoyed playing with the boys and spent her free time doing as they did. (4) Pocahontas was a Powhatan Native American born around 1595. (2) Smith has said that without Pocahontas he would have been killed. (1) There is some debate whether Pocahontas saved Smith’s life. (4) In Smith’s earliest version of his meeting with Powhatan there was no mention of Pocahontas. (5) In late 1609, John Smith returned to England for medical care. The English told the Indians, Smith was dead. (2) But Pocahontas and John Smith went on to be good friends. (4) Pocahontas and John Smith are now known as a famous rescue.
