Salva is very lucky to be alive from half the things he has been threw. He has many challenges he faces in his journey, and a few include running away from the the war as an 11 year old boy, crossing the nile river and not having a stable boat for everyone in his group, and being chased out of his camp he was at for six years.

The first challenge Salva faced in the book was when he was in school and everyone was just sitting there listening to the teacher and they all hear gunshots, and the teacher says the war is coming towards them so the teacher insists they run over to the bush and keep going and don’t turn around to go home.
