“Active-shooter situations in the U.S. have surged, to an average of 19 such incidents annually since 2010, from fewer than 9 annually in the prior decade” (Mims 4). This startling fact shows how gun violence is growing in America. Multiple different kinds of violence are happening, but why? What will this do to our society? How can things be altered to help with this issue? An answer to these issues might be gun control or better security in public places. Gun violence is a threat to our future society. The history of gun control started during slavery, and though it could be looked at like a loss of individual rights, there still need to be laws about it so communities can stay safe.

The author, Christopher Mims, explains how Sandy Hook Elementary School, a school where “20 children and 6 adults were killed in December 2012”, is adding a higher amount of security to their new school. The school added added a fence around the school, a garden was added, and someone can only enter through one of three doors. (Mims 1). Adding a better security system to schools and other public places like hospitals, offices, and movie theaters would make mass shootings less easy to do. Having cameras around a building might help even just a little bit to stop someone from starting a mass shooting. Someone could be seen before a shooting actually takes place, so it would also save many lives. Mims also states that, “In June, the Stanley Mechanical Solutions unit of Stanley Black & Decker Inc. unveiled its Shelter system, designed to allow a teacher, security office or administrator to lock the door to a classroom, or every room in a school, with the press of a button on a wireless pendant. Simultaneously, the system alerts law enforcement” (Mims 1). A better system like that could help schools and businesses everywhere, but the price of this system is on the higher end, so it would be harder for every school or every business to have one of these doors that could keep everyone safe from a mass
