The Law Society: Maintaining a Free and Fair America Since 1873, every piece of U.S. currency has carried the label “E Pluribus Unum”: out of many, one (About: E Pluribus Unum). If Americans are truly to embody this mentality in their day-to-day lives, they must act first and foremost to unify the country on a small and a large scale and not to further their own personal interests. In a free society such as the U.S., unity is crucial in the achievement of progression and equality. Of course, it would be foolish to expect that any society is completely unified in its beliefs, but a society is perfectly capable of being unified by its actions, so long as its citizens abide by a rigid code of reasonable laws representing the society’s values as a whole and protecting the freedoms and rights of its population. It is these laws that provide true strength and common ground to a free society and allow it to create one out of many. In fact, some of the nation’s and world’s most successful campaigns for change have been conducted without ever violating existing laws. One recent example of such a campaign is the women’s marches that took place all across America on the twenty-first of January. Researchers estimate that the march attracted between three and five million Americans from California to Washington D.C. (Darrow). Moreover, a poll by the Washington Post shows that 40% of Democratic women plan to become more active in politics in the wake of the marches, as well as many people of different genders and political identities (Clement).
