Reasons Why College Athletes Should Get Paid

It has been widely regarded for as long as we can remember that one simple question has had over a thousand different answers. Some may feel strongly one way, while others may find several different reasons as to why they should disagree. Should college athletes get paid? Technically speaking they are in fact workers for their respective universities, but on the other hand they are also technically not professionals (who get paid for the same thing). Who gets to decide what the stipulations are for who gets paid and who doesn’t? One of those particular individuals, Dave Zirin, who is for the paying of student athletes wrote “An Economist Explains Why College Athletes Should Be Paid”, published in 2015 on The Nation. That’s basically what it all boils down to when you really sit and think about it. Obviously some people seem to be under the notion that the NCAA is extremely corrupt and depriving these young student athletes of money that rightfully theirs in a sense. The rhetoric he uses throughout the article is almost flawless and it goes into great detail on many solid points as to why the student athletes deserve that compensation for basically drawing these hundreds of millions of dollars to these colleges and universities. Zirin makes many compelling arguments such as paying the student athletes would control the obscene college coaching salaries. I understand that coaches are in a free labor market, but why are coaches like Nick Saban being paid $6.9 million, as per Cork Gaines of Business Insider.
