Why I Chose College

In Ohio, there are plenty of superb nearby engineering programs to choose from, so I went to the best people for college admission advice: college students. Fellow orchestra member Erica Pinto told me three key reasons why she choose the University of Michigan to study chemical engineering: a lively campus life, a great theater and dance school, and a reputable engineering program. While the second reason doesn’t apply to me, the other two definitely do. One of my priorities when I sifted through my college choices was that I really wanted a college near a large city. The more I read about Ann Arbour and its cultural events, the more I can easily picture myself here. The more I read about this message, the more I realize that benefits of going to a public school looking for variety rather than a super selective private school that is only looking for a certain kind of person. Along with top rankings, I look at engineering opportunities in order see which colleges on my list have the edge. Looking up the various programs like Engineering Global Leadership (EGL), Program in Sustainable Engineering (PISE), and the growing entrepreneurial community makes me realize how many more opportunities are available here because of its sheer size. For any undergrad, the ability and option to explore whatever you want to do while knowing that there will be a brand new community with each path is incredibly enticing. The University of Michigan really catches my eye because within all of the top fifteen reputable undergraduate engineering schools, this one feels the least pretentious and the one with the most Midwest charm I am used to.
