As a child, my dream was to become a doctor. Now as a young adult I continue to strive for this. My involvement in academic and extra-curricular activities has prepared me to continue pursuing my goal. A major factor that has contributed to my decision in the medical field is the Health Science program at Rio Grande City High School as well as the extracurricular & volunteering activities that I’m a part of in my community. I want to pursue a career as a doctor so I can make a difference in people's health. What else led you to choose this career path? How does this career relate to you as a person?

In the class, I had the opportunity to job shadow medical staff at Starr County Memorial Hospital, Family Health Center, Family Specialty Clinic, and at RGV Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. My favorite place to shadow was at the hospital at wound-care and labor and delivery. I really enjoyed wound-care because every day that I went, I witnessed a different case; also the medical staff in that area were enthusiastic about their work and were great at teaching us what caused certain infections and how they treated it. Job shadowing at labor and delivery was a great experience as well since I got to meet newborn babies and take their vital signs as well as the mothers. (say more why this was your favorite. How did it impact you?) My third year, I took Medical Billing and that class was an immense learning experience! I become skilled at coding patient’s diagnosis using ICD-9, and how to set up appointments. Being a part of sports team helped create qualities such as time management, self-confidence, commitment, and focus just to name a few. My involvement in sports has helped me learn how to manage my time wisely and to focus on the task at hand. Being involved in sports is excellent at creating self-confidence and like the saying goes, “If you don’t believe in yourself, who will?” Being a part of a team requires commitment which is an essential quality one needs in order to pursue a successful career in life. Being a part of a committee that established the first ecology club created qualities such as leadership and organization. As the reporter, I have to let our members know what our agenda is for the week and as an officer I’m in charge of a group of members that help me do rounds. Each of the officers was assigned a hallway from the entire school, and during certain periods an officer along with a handful of member go to remove the recyclable paper teachers and students are leaving in the classroom bin. What are these? This organization taught me how to be more organized with everything I’m involved
