Growing up, I was taught many values; however helping others and giving back to my community is the one that best defines me as a person and has challenged me the most. It has lead me to many gratifying moments, triumphs, lessons learned, and to the path of civil engineering. Currently, I am in a Senior Project Class where I researched a topic that I could use to help my community. I wanted my project to have a significant impact in society. After numerous days of critical thinking, I decided to research third world countries’ water issues. This is a major problem and I want to have a positive impact in our ecosystem and in the well-being of others. When I first started my project, I did not know what my approach was going to be or if it would be adequate. With hard work, dedication, and sleepless nights, I accomplished a lot. I got others involved in my project, interviewed leaders and developed my marketing skills. Most importantly, I made a change in communities where help was desperately needed. I interviewed the Head of UNICEF’s WASH, and a prospective civil engineer that did fieldwork in Guatemala regarding water issues. This required a lot of work because I not only had to do research on my topic but on these professionals as well, I had to be prepared. Also, I got the Chief Executive Officer of my school as well as a previous employee of the Monterey Bay Aquarium interested in my project that they became my advisors. It wasn’t always easy to talk to these people because I would often get nervous especially because I set high standards so I was always expected to do more, even beyond my work and
